Abstract : Six tests were developed to measure the substantive, procedural, and diagnostic understandings of mechanics for the AN/APQ-24 airborne radar-computer equipment. Four of the tests were routine multiple-choice tests, while 2 of the tests for diagnostic understanding were of a new tab form designed for the assessment of aspects of trouble-shooting performance. Each tab item included a description of a malfunctioning radar set, including a line drawing of the scope; below this was a list of checks which the mechanic might wish to make. A description of the response of the set to each of these checks was covered by a removable tab. The mechanic performs as many checks as he considers necessary by removing tabs and makes his slection of the malfuntioning component of the system from another list. By removing a tab alongside his choice, the mechanic can tell whether the choice was correct. In the event of an incorrect choice, the checking process can be continued and another choice made. A preliminary evaluation of the tests was made, and the test battery was considered sufficiently reliable and valid for further study.
