Abstract : Instrumentation systems for measuring neutron flux are being studied, and research is being conducted toward the evolution of rugged, long-life components for use in such systems. Rapid dynamic speed of response of the entire system to changes in neutron flux is stressed in the development program. Components under consideration as offering the most promise for use in high-level systems include a rapid-response thermopile positive to neutrons, a low-impendance magnetic-modulator preamplifier suitable for use with the thermopile, a transistor carrier amplifier to follow the modulator, and an output amplifier suitable for driving a conversion transducer. Low-level system components being considered include a standard proportional counter tube, a ruggedized transistor pulse amplifier, and an output unit which will convert pulse-rate information into steady signal voltages representing the level or the period.
