Abstract : The basic flow problems considered are: acceleration (or retardation) of turbulent flow in a straight duct; the flow in a 2-dimenensional, curved duct and the flow in a space of revolution with uniformity of the mean flow in peripheral directions; boundary-layer flow in a space of revolution with different characteristics of this flow in the peripheral and meridional directions; behavior of a circumferential nonuniformity in a space of revolution with rotation of the flow about the axis of symmetry; and unsteady interaction of 2 circumferential nonuniformities as well as a multiplicity of circumferential nonuniformities having different rates of rotation in a space of revolution. Experimental flow configurations are presented which range from a straight, 2-dimensional, diverging duet and a curved duct to a single stage axial-flow test blower with span-wise nonuniform blade circulations. Disscussions are included on (1) the 3-dimensional theory of frictionless flow in turbomachinery and (2) the application of the statistical theory of turbulence to the flow in turbomachinery.
