Abstract : A variational principle was used in conjunction with a trial function for the surface-current density to obtain expressions for the far-zone field and scattering cross section of a cylindrical mirror excited by a plane wave. The trial function consisted of a linear combination of the optical and quasi-static current distributions so that the derived expressions are valid over a wide range of frequencies. The plane wave was assumed to be polarized so that (1) the electric vector paralled the mirror axis and (2) the formation was reduced to a 2-dimensional scalar problem. The method was considered applicable to the evaluation of the properties of a large class of diffracting obstacles.
