Abstract : A detailed study of the sand, silt and clay mineralogy has been completed. Minerals in the sand and silt sizes were determined by petrographic microscope work. Mineralogy of these grain sizes is believed to be important with respect to 'mineralogic fouling' of ground mine orifices. Clay mineralogy directly affects the engineering characteristics of a sediment composite when present in significant quantities. To this end, liaison has been established with the Soils Stabilization Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and differential thermal and X-ray analyses of representative silt and clay fractions are being conducted at this laboratory.
