Abstract : The yawing motion of a shell with an internal mechanism is considered in this paper. The mechanism considered is either an axially mounted cantilever beam or a spring mounted mass. The motion of the shell is restricted to the small yaw regime, and the relative deflections of the mechanism with respect to the shell are considered to be sufficiently small that the restoring torque (or force) is linear. With the above assumption, it is shown that there is a resonance magnification of asymmetries in the mechanism if the natural frequency of the mechanism is near the spin frequency of the shell. It is further shown that dynamic instability is introduced in the spin-stabilized case if the natural frequency of the mechanism is near the precessional frequency of the shell. (Author)
