Abstract : Efforts are being directed toward improving the WL-6285 magnetron. A 1-in.-diam output window was made with Pyroceram. The window assembly was heat-cycled prior to assembly into a small magnetron and was subsequently cycled to full filament power to determine any adverse effect of the thermal radiation pattern on the Pyroceram window. No difficulties occurred in any of the tests. Efforts were continued to produce a structure that would give total shielding of the output window from thermal radiation from the cathode. A WL-6285 magnetron bearing was placed on a dc modulator for a high-power test at a 360-pps repetition rate and a 5-microsec pulse width. The switch tubes did not deionize after a pulse, and the dc power supply was short circuited, causing the breaker to open. This difficulty did not occur with the use of a resistance load unless the resistance was greater than the matched value. The magnetron was tested with a minimum of difficulty to a level of 8.92 megawatt at full duty; very little sparking occurred. Starting was easy at the 7.5-megawatt level. A resonance which caused a large 60-cripple occurred occassionally in the modulator power supply filter; this difficulty was corrected by the addition of a 96-ohm 600-w resistor in parallel to the filter choke.
