Abstract : The patent describes a process for the synthesis of a dihydrocarbonphosphinate wherein a dihydrocarbonhalophosphine is oxidized in the presence of a dihydrocarbon sulfoxide, such as dimethylsulfoxide, and the reaction mixture thereof is reacted with an appropriate alcohol to form the desired ester. Dihydrocarbonphosphinates are useful as intermediates for making polymeric metal phosphinates, which have a wide versatility of uses, such as pigments for paints, rust inhibitors, and fabricating material for various shaped plastic-like articles.
