Abstract : The invention contemplates a character identification system for rapidly and positively identifying characters, symbols, alphanumerics, arabic numbers, etc., which comprise a source of collimated coherent light, impinging upon a substantially plane surface having relatively opaque and transparent portions defining the character to be identified. A two-dimensional diffraction means is positioned in the path of the collimated coherent light which passes through the relatively opa ue and transparent portions of the plane surface thus forming a plurality of spatially disposed diffraction patterns which are substantially identical and also distinctive of the character to be identified.
