Abstract : The patent describes an apparatus for, and a method of, achieving mode-locked operation in a Q-switched laser by using a transparent, photoelastic, uniaxial birefringent crystal. Mode-locked operation is achieved by interposing the crystal within the laser resonant cavity which is of a predetermined length for use with the particular crystal. The crystal is positioned on the longitudinal axis of the laser, and between the laser medium and the Q-switch, with the optic axis of the crystal being in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the laser.
