Abstract : The patent describes a motion detection transducer comprising of a sensing element and an excitation-shield element, both elements being formed of a conductive metal. The sensing element, whose front surface is usually flat, is partially or completely surrounded by and spaced apart from the excitation-shield element. The front surfaces of both elements are in the same geometric plane. The sensing element is connected directly to a charge amplifier by means of a coaxial cable while the excitation-shield element is connected to a source of constant, direct current voltage. The transducer is particularly useful in measuring the relative motion of electrically conductive surfaces or objects.
