Abstract : The patent describes a method of fabricating boron suboxide articles. A mixture of boron and boric oxide is initially compressed in a metal die lined successively with sheets of graphite and tantalum. After release of the pressure on the resulting compacted article, it is covered with a layer of a mixture of boron nitride and boric oxide and is subjected to compressing steps in the lined die while heating the die at a temperature sufficient to melt the boric oxide. An article of boron suboxide or other boron-oxygen composition is then obtained after removal of the boron nitride coating. An article fabricated from boron suboxide has outstanding physical properties, particularly as regards high hardness and high modulus of elasticity and low density.
