Abstract : THE EXPERIMENT DESCRIBED INVOLVED THE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND PRELIMINARY USE OF A VARIABLE ENERGY PHOTON MONOCHROMATOR. THE MONCHROMATOR PERMITS THE MEASUREMENT OF REACTIONS PRODUCED BY PHOTONS WHOSE ENERGY IS KNOWN TO AOUT 1(. THIS SYSTEM, BASED ON A METHOD OF CONTROLLED BREMSSTRAHLUNG, HAS MANY IMPORTANT ADVANTAGES OVER STANDARD PHOTON SOURCES AS A TOOL FOR STUDYING NUCLEAR STRUCTURE. THE PARTICULAR NUCLEAR REACTION STUDIED, THE ELASTIC SCATTERING OF PHOTONS BY GOLD NUCLEI,IS BUT ONE EXAMPLE OF THE MANY TYPES OF REACTIONS WHICH CAN BE STUDIED WITH THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED. THE PHOTON MONOCHROMATOR USES BREMSSTRAHLUNG PHOTONS PRODUCED BY THE EXTERNAL ELECTRON BEAM OF THE ILLINOIS 25 NEV BETATRON. THE PHOTON ENERGY IDENTIFICATION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY MEASURING THE ENERGY OF THE ELECTRONS BEFORE AND AFTER THE BREMSSTRAHLUNG PROCESS. IF THE BREMSSTRAHLUNG PHOTON INDUCES A NUCLEAR REACTION, THE SIMULTANEOUS DETEC TION OF THE REACTION PRODUCT AND THE POST-BREMSSTRAHLUNG ELECTRON IDENTIFIES THE ENERGY OF THE INITIATING PHOTON
