Abstract : This report includes: APPARATUS FOR ZONE MELTING IN A CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE, by Sherman Susman and George Yamate. 1960, 11p. incl. illus. Research effort was directed toward improving the single crystal CdTe to achieve solar cell material, and achieving as useful a fabrication technique for solar cells as is possible. CdTe samples from the controlled atmosphere zone refining furnace show no alternate n- and p-type regions using the thermoelectric probe technique in contrast with the material obtained from the Stockbarger furnace. The thermoelectric voltages on scanning approach in smoothness those from a silicon wafer used for comparison purposes. The shape of the absorption edge in cadmium telluride is contrasted with that from silicon and possible effects on fabrication procedures are discussed. Optical absorption spectra covering the range from the absorption edge (about 860 millimicrons) to 2600 millimicrons have been made on different samples; the existence and shape of defect absorption bands for photon energies near 0.5 ev are consistent with the defect levels previously found by current fluctuation measurements. Photovoltaic cells were fabricated from zone refined material, and photovoltages in excess of 200 m llivolts are found. (Author)
