Abstract : Since the inception of Columbia University's Hudson Laboratories in 1951, extensive research in underwater acoustics has made it desirable to calibrate hydrophones used in experimental work at the time of their manufacture, after the experiments are completed, and prior to their reuse. To facilitate routine calibration of hydrophones, an unpressurized two-section tank was constructed, as well as a pressurized tank capable of acoustic calibration to hydrostatic pressures to 10,000 psi. Acoustic calibrations can be made in these tanks using a calibrated reference standard over the frequency range of 2-1000 c in the unpressurized tank, and 50-500 c in the high-pressure tank. The unpressurized tank generates the acoustic signal with a piston driver; the high-pressure tank, with a ceramic driver. (Author)
