Abstract : An examination is made of the physical bases for the description of turbulence by probability distributions, and for the closure problem which arises from this description. A discussion is given of the analytical approaches to the closure problem and some mathematical inter-relations of these schemes are cited. Certain consequences of the several approaches are illustrated by applying them to an idealized turbulent convection problem for which they all yield explicit solutions. (Author)
