Abstract : With the ad of numeical examples, a regression method is described by means of which a pilot may use limatologcal wind data and the observed wind at flight level to estimate the vertical profle of horizontal wind below him. The recent publication of pertinent climatological wind statistics for the Northern Hemisphere makes it possble to extend use of the method to arbitrary locations in that hemisphere. The incorporation of these statistics into the method is discussed. Profile estimates by the method can be improved if further informtion about their operational purposes is avilable. It is assumed that the profiles are to be used in bombing operations. Possibilities for further work in profile estimation are discussed. These include the development of wind statistcs from synoptic-climatological types, wind classifiations, and more deailed use of operational data. Calculated 10- and 90-percentile winds, by seasons, at and below various assumed flight levels at 20 Northern Hemisphere stations are presented. (Author)
