Abstract : IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT A CAPACITIVE ELECTRIC FIELD APPLIED NORMALLY TO THE SURFACE OF MANY SEMICONDUCTORS PRODUCES AN OBSERVABLE EFFECT ON THE CONDUCTIVITY OF THE SEMICONDUCTOR. The effects on the resistance of such a capacitive field are expected to vary directly with the square of the resistivity of the material. The discrepancy between the observed and expected change in conductance arising from an applied field is used to study the density and energies of the surface states on semiconductors. (Author)
