Abstract : The investigation of the nonlinear interaction of an electromagnetic wave and an ionized gas in the presence of dc magnetic field is described. A theoretical analysis was made of the harmonic power generated within a plasma layer of finite dimensions in the direction of propagation. It was assumed that the electromagnetic wave propagates in the direction normal to the direction of the dc magnetic field and that the plasma is of uniform electron density distribution throughout the plasma layer. The theoretical analysis employed a small signal assumption, and within this assumption power at the h-th harmonic was predicted. A reiteration technique was used in order to predict the effects of these harmonics on propagation at the fundamental frequency. An experimental program endeavored to produce, in the laboratory, an ionized gas whose characteristics agree with the theoretical assumptions. Curves of the experimental results are presented and compared with the theoretical predictions. (Author)
