Abstract : INSTRUMENTS FOR THE DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL WIND WERE INCORPORATED INTO NEW INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS FOR MEASURING THE FLUXES OF MOMENTUM AS WELL AS OF SENSIBLE HEAT AND ATMOSPHERIC HUMIDITY. The anemometer cups for sensing the horizontal wind are of light weight molded plastic which are attached by stainless steel spokes to an aluminum hub. The entire cup assembly weighs only 7 grams. The shaft to which it is attached is of hardened stainless steel rotating within two rings of miniature ball bearings and pivoted at the lower end on a hardened steel plate. A shutter is mounted at the base of the shaft so as to interrupt a beam of light from a miniature lamp to a photocell housed in the horizontal anemometer support. The electrical output of the photocell is amplified and used to actuate an electromechanical counter, each revolution of the cup assembly registering one count. (Author)
