Abstract : IT IS SHOWN HOW TO APPROXIMATE A CLASS OF Laplace transforms, say A(p), which involve the ratio of sums of generalized hypergeometric functions. The latter transcendentals are approximated by rational functions (Luke, Y.L., Jour. Math. Phys. 38, 279-294, 1960). Thus A(p) is approximated by a rational function and inversion of the latter leads to simple and useful approximations for the inverse transform of A(p). For an application, a stress problem (Miklowitz, J., Jour. Appl. Mech. Ser. E, 27, 165-171, 1960) is studied, and the results manifest the simplicity and accuracy of our approximation technique.
