Abstract : IN STUDIES OF THE REINFORCEMENT OF HIGH TEMPERATURE METALS AND ALLOYS WITH ULTRA HIGH STRENGTH FIBERS (whiskers), the problem of developing a useful bond between the whisker and the metal matrix was the subject of primary concern. A procedure for incorporation of the fibers into the matrix has been developed. However, no significant improvements in tensile strengths have been observed in composites, indicating that the bond between the matrix and the reinforcing whisker is not transmitting the applied stress to the very much stronger fiber. Metallographic examination of the composites also reveals that no bond is being obtained. Means for improving the metal-to-fiber bond are now being studied. (Author)
