Abstract : The Cerenkov radiation produced by a modulated beam of electrons passing through a hole in an infinite dielectric is calculated. The Cerenkov radiation is considered to be a microwave coupler for demodulating an electron beam. The analysis is carried out as a boundary-value problem with space-charge effects included and with the assumption that the electrons have no transverse velocity. The equation determining the propagation constant along the beam has not yet been solved because of its complexity, but it is shown that under certain conditions of Cerenkov radiation the propagation constant is complex, thus admitting the possibility of growing waves along the electron beam.
