Abstract : A survey is presented of applications for acoustical waves in chemistry to provide background information on fundamental and processing applications which are related even somewhat remotely to research on desalination of sea water. Emphasis has been placed on fundamental electrochemical applications involving the use of ultrasonic techniques for the study of the structure of electrolytes, the kinetics of fast homogeneous reactions in solutions, the kinetics of electrode processes, and the structure of solid-electrolytic solution interfaces. Processing applications which are described include increased mass and heat transfer in fluids, dispersion and coagulation effects, degassing of liquids, crystallization phenomena, and sonochemical effects.
