Abstract : Qualitative experiments on the combustion of boron rods in fluorine and chlorine trifluoride gases were performed in a static system. After the rod was ignited, the reactions were selfsustaining at a temperature considerably less than the steady-state combustion temperature for boron in oxygen (approximately 1600 versus 2400 K). The reaction products were not condensable at room temperature. (Author)
