Abstract : The cyclotron waves on oppositely directed interpenetrating electron beams or plasmas of finite transverse cross section in a finite axial magnetic focusing field interact to give a nonconvective or time growing instability. This instability, unlike the usual space-charge-wave nonconvective instability, is possible for physically realizable electron beams. If the d-c drift velocity of the two oppositely directed beams is slightly different, then a disturbance propagates in space as well as grows in time. In addition to the above instability, the spacecharge waves of one beam can interact with the cyclotron wave on the other beam. (Author)
