Abstract : A historic review of the development of our ideas on buckling is presented. It continues with a report of work on the stability of thin shells now under way at Stanford University. The results obtained so far in this investigation can be presented under three headings: First, a new solution is found to the classical small-deflection equations of t e stability of thin-walled circular cylindrical shells. The second part deals with the large displacements developing when the thin circular cylindrical shell suddenly snaps through into a polyhedral buckled shape often designated as the diamond shape. In the final part the transmission of the axial load through the fully buckled circular cylindrical shell is studied. (Author)
