Abstract : The performance was evaluated of commercially available silicon solar cells which are to be used as a power source in the space radiation field surrounding the earth. The experiment was specifically designed to provide information on the proton radiation encountered by solar cells operating in space. The results indicated that a 25% reduction in maximum power output of the cell occurred at integrated fluxes of approximately 5 x 10 to the 9th and 10th power protons/sq cm for 3-Mev and 13-Mev protons, respectively. The cells were further irradiated to obtain a reduction in maximum power output of about 40 to 50%. Room-temperature annealing of the cells was observed for a period of four weeks with no significant changes occurring. The proton source, the apparatus for measuring the electrical output of the solar cell, and the results of the experiment are presented. (Author)
