Abstract : A PROGRAM WAS INITIATED TO PROVIDE THERMODYNAMIC DATA FOR Be species in cases where critical uncertainties exist and reliable performance data for propellants cannot be calculated. The principal effort centers on determination of the heats of formation of gaseous species in the BeO-H system. A review of previous work on species in the system at high temperatures is presented. Transpiration studies of the reaction of water vapor with beryllia have given evidence for formation of a volatile product. LANS FOR POSITIVELY IDENTIFYING THE PRODUCT AND OBTAINING THERMODYNAMIC DAT BY THE MASS SPECTROMETRIC TECHNIQUE ARE DESCRIBED. Other reactions are proposed for studying Be(OH)2, BeOH and Be2O. A description of the high temperature mass spectrometer and gas introduction system being used in this work is given with an outline of the method employed in the study of heterogeneous reactions.
