Abstract : An optical maser device is described by which a pressure broadened mercury lamp provides the outside light source. The mercury line was observed at high resolution and was found to be self-reversed. An adsorption cell containing potassium-absorbed energy was found to be about half as intense as mercury. The apparatus was assembled such that the mercury lamp was focussed by means of an elliptical cylinder onto a closed cell containing vaporized potassium.
