Abstract : Several runs were made in the high-pressure furnace with the object of synthesizing sulfides of U and of Th. The first run was made using only a small amount of the reactants (U turnings and S) and raising the emperature very slowly to 780 C. After cooling, the reaction product appeared to be an inhomogeneous mixture of sulfides varying in color from brown to dark gray. An attempt to identify the specimen by X-ray diffraction failed. In a second run, U and S were heated to about 2000 C. X-ray diffraction gave a weak pattern of uranium monosulfide, but the presence of other phases cannot thereby be ruled out. The result of a third run, in which U and S were again heated to 2000 C, was an ingot which appeared to have completely melted, and which had a bright metallic luster. An attempt to identify the substance b X-ray diffraction, resulted in a film on which no reflections appeared, and only a light background. Subsequently, a pattern was obtained; however, all attempts to identify the pattern have failed. (Author)
