Abstract : An analytical procedure was developed for determining Sn(++), but it has not been possible to determine Sn(4+) ion in the presence of Sn(++), or to quantitatively reduce Sn(4+) to Sn(++) by means of the Jones reductor. At temperatures below the normal boiling point, no reduction of Sn(4+) to Sn(++) is obtained with HCHO as the reduci g ag nt, in concentrated HCl solutions. At 200 C, a high pressure build-up occurs in the reaction tubes; on breaking the tubes, the pressure rele e is so violent t at it is difficult to collect th sample. Although this may be invalidating th results, no reduction of Sn(4+) to Sn(++) w observed. (Author)
