Abstract : One of the common objectives of many control systems is to make outputs of the systems follow some functions as closely as possible. The functions to be duplicated by the outputs may be the signal part of the inputs to the systems or desired signals of some kind. Thus, it is often desired to build a control system which produces the output which follows the known functions most closely in terms of the appropriately defined criterion function. Given such a criterion function, one may be in a position to give some partial ordering to various control laws (or control policies) to be mechanized, and thus may be able to choose the law best suited for the job.
