Abstract : The thermodynamic activities of the three solution components have been determined at 25 degrees for CuCl2, FeCl2, and FeCl3 in mixtures with HCl at constant concentration. The salt concentration was varied in each series of mixtures from 0 to saturation. For both CuCl2AND FeCl2 three series were studied having HCl molalities of 4.70, 7.00, and 9.00. A single series of solutions containing 7.00 molal HCl and FeCl3 was investigated. Measurements were made of the HCl and H2O vapor pressures by the gas transpiration method, and the activity of the nonvolatile salt was calculated by integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. Data are presented for the CuCl2 and FeCl2 systems by empirical equations determined by the method of least squares. The results of the study of the FeCl3 system are tabulated. (Author)
