The distortion of the elecronic wave funcion of a homonuclear diatomic molecle is considered for that cae where the perturbing atom or molecule is on the moleculr symetry axis. A wave funcion paticulaly applicable to the physial situation is developed, and this wave function is specificlly determined for diatomic oxygen as an example. The electric dipole moment thus induced in oxygen is then computed as a funcion of perurer separaton. (Author)
