Abstract : Results of experimental techniques for conversion of graphite surfaces to carbides by vapor deposition of metals from iodide compounds are discussed. An additional method for deposition is described which consists of vaporizing iodine, combining with the metal and passing metal iodide into a deposition chamber where dissociation of the iodide and deposition of the metal occurs upon a pre-selected geometry. Initial fabrication of low-temperature-setting chemically-bonded thorium oxide bodies with apparent porosities of 35 to 60% for application as composite nozzle back-up material was successful.
