Abstract : Notice: Only Military Offices may request from ASTI. Others request approval of Ar old Engineering Development Center, Arnold Air Force Station, Tenn. E CRIPTORS: (*Turbojet engines, High alti tude, Temperature control, Control systems, Supersonics, Operation, Tests, Flight testing.) Identifiers: J85 engines.A test program for the YJ85 and J85-GE-5 turbojet engines at imula d altitude and Mach number flight conditions was conducted to evluate the overall engine performance and control system operating characteristics. The engine performance g nerally met or exceeded the manufacturer's estimated minimum steady-state performance in the range of flight conditions from sea-level static to 6 ,000-ft altitude and Mach nu bers up to and including Mach 1.5 at standard, hot, and cold osph ric con itions. Engine transient performanc was not completely satisfactory when operating at the low Mach number boun ary of the engin fligh envelope above an al itude of 25,000 ft. Engine windmill starts were acco plished at all points on the manufacturer's guaranteed start envelope. (Author)
