Abstract : The derivation of the thermal effects on the dispersion relation for the propagation of both transverse and longitudinal waves in an unbounded, collisionless plasma is derived in a consistent and straightforward manner by the method of superposition of streams. The assumptions made are explicit, and the applicability to other more particular cases is obvious. A comparison is made with results obtained by otherAUTHORS, AND THE DIFFERENCES, WHERE THEY OCCUR, ARE EXPLAINED. The relationship of this method with a more common method is pointed out, together with pitfalls to be avoided. (Author)
