Abstract : Techniques for sterilization of water and solids recovered from human wastes were evaluated fo use aboard a space vehicle, in which space, weight, and power requirements must be minimal. Filtration through cellulosic membranes, requiring no added weight for power source, is recommended for bacteriological sterilization of water. Cryoxcide gas, for treatment of solids, and Halazone, for auxiliary or emergency chemical disinfection, are recommended. Suggestions are made for design of apparatus to sterilize waste under conditions of zero gravity. (Author)
