Abstract : The important far infrared emission processes for hot nitrogen are listed and the possibilities of a pure rotational band occurring for the nitrogen molecular ion are considered in some detail. The approximations inherent in the quantum mechanical model are stated and the resulting emission by that model is considered. The molecular orbital model is considered next. The charge distribution resulting from this model is found to be highly symmetrical for all low-lying electronic states. Both models predicted negligible band emission. Consequently, the significant far infrared emission of nitrogen appears to be solely that of the continuum radiation processes. (Author)
