Abstract : Routine standard and precordial lead electrocardiograms were obtained on 36 chimpanzees in the range from 1 to 10 years. Analysis of the tracings relative to the duration of the electrocardiographic intervals, the amplitude of the waves, the mean electrical axes and cardiac rhythm was performed. The relationships of these electrocardiographic data to age, body weight and heart rate were studied and a comparison of these observations with children of comparable age and body weight was performed. Similar age and heart rate relationships in the electrocardiographic intervals of the human and chimpanzee were noted. Of particular interest were the findings of a lower amplitude and duration of the ventricular depolarization process (QRS) in the chimpanzee and a marked difference in the projection of the T waves. These observations on the electrocardiogram of the chimpanzee demonstrate the feasibility of obtaining and analysing the electrocardiogram in this animal and the applicability of the information derived to the understanding of the human electrocardiogram.
