Abstract : An investigation is presented of the application of tunnel diodes in grounded lossy networks without any transformers for realizing transfer functions with as few restrictions as necessary. After choosing a lumped, linear, small-signal equivalent circuit for the model of the device as a capacitance in parallel with a negative conductance, some properties of networks in which the tunnel diode is embedded are obtained. A systematic study of transfer function synthesis is developed. One of the synthesis techniques gives rise to a cascade connection of an RC and an RL network embedded with at most 2 tunnel diodes. Hence the capacitors and inductors can be provided with different amounts of dissipation. An integral part of this transducer network can be used as the dc bias circuit for the tunnel diodes, thereby assuring no change in the transfer characteristic of the network when the diodes are energized by a single dc supply. DC stability of the diodes is also guaranteed when the network is ac stable. The decomposition of a polynomial such that its zeros can be realized as the natural frequencies of a cascade connection of an RC and an RL network with a tunnel diode in shunt between them is considered.
