Abstract : Wake electron density caused by the passage of a hypervelocity pellet through air was measured using a transmission resonant cavity technique. Initial electron density and rate of decay were determined as a function of pellet velocity and air pressure. At lower pellet velocities, initial densities were less than frozen-in values, but greater than those computed for equilibrium wakes. At higher velocities the initial densities fell below equilibrium values. Rates of decay were large enough to indicate rapid fall of wake temperature, but not large enough to agree with undisturbed air electron attachment rates. (Author)
