Abstract : A survey was made of long-life systems for producing small quantities of electrical power for use in an oceanic environment. Those systems and concepts which proved to be either completely impractical for the intended application, or which required further research or technical development, are briefly discussed. These latter systems and concepts must be examined in more detail than was permitted here before their attractiveness for future development can be determined. Batteries or galvanic devices, mechanical devices, thermomechanical devices, direct conversion devices, fuel cells, solid state devices, terrestrial devices, and solar devices are discussed.
