Abstract : Identifiers: Ductility. The MoS2 thermal dissociation process was reexamined in light of recent improvements in the purity of commercial molybdate powders. The Mo powder produced by thermal dissociation of MoS2 was not considered equivalent to the product of H reduction of ammonium paramolybdate. Thermal dissociation work was replaced by a program of research aimed at finding new means for producing high quality ductile Mo. One phase was to investigate the possibility of producing Mo with a low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature by solid-state purification of commercial, unalloyed Mo. A description is given of an apparatus constructed to determine the practical limitations of solid-state purification techniques. Samples of swaged and swaged plus zone-refined Mo were evaluated. Results indicated that the starting material was rather pure, and that some contamination occurred during zone-refining. (Author)
