Abstract : Effort concer s the effec ive utili tio of o pr ci u i g compone ts in u iqu tec ni ues for precise frequency synthesis. Th se components are solid-state devices, such as variable capacitance diod s, ferroelectric capacitors, and controllable inductors. Combining a discretefrequency reference and an electro ically-tuned pha e-lock oscill tor in he g ra io of pr ci fr u ci makes it po ible to construct a unit whos output frequency can have certain discrete values. This unit, called a discrete-frequency generator, has an output frequency which is precisely one of the harmonics of the discrete-frequency reference. By using several discr te-frequency generators, each with different increme al eps, combining, a d king t e mixed output, i is pos ibl to cov r id over- ll range in small incremental step . The design and construction of a discrete-frequency synthesizer which tunes ov r a 1-mc range in 10-kc steps (two significant figures) is carried out to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed tech ique.
