Abstract : A method frequently proposed for modifying the electrical properties of the plasma sheath involves injection of various compounds into the gas stream. By introducing molecules of low ionization potential, the electron density should be enhanced. Injection of electronegative species may reduce the electrical conductivity. To test these ideas, an experimental program was conducted using an argon plasma arc jet as a hot gas source. The relative changes of electrical conductivity of the gas mixture formed from the jet and ablation products were measured. The ablating materials were teflon and epoxy. Additional information was obtained by examining the radiation emitted from different gas stream locations in the wavelength interval 2436 to 5214 Angstroms. A Bair 3-m er diffraction grating instrument was used. (Author)
