Abstract : A study is presented of two symmetry-types of planar hydromagnetic steady flows of a uniform, incompressible conducting fluid, moving under the influence of its own magnetic field. The motions considered are special cases of a fairly wide class of hydromagnetic flows exhibited by Lin (Archive of Rational Mechanics and Analysis 1:391-395, 1958). The equations of motion and induction, for both types, are formulated as nonlinear partial differential equations in a pair of stream functions, for the fluid velocity and magnetic field. Various general features of these flows are discussed, and a number of special exact solutions are derived for one of these types, in unbounded space. In an appendix, a method is given by which the formulation of the infinite-conductivity cases is reducible to a single equation. (Author)
