Abstract : Young's modulus was measure a a function of density and age hardeni g for snow processed by Peter and Snowblast millers during the summer of 1959 at Site 2 located 220 miles E. of Thule near 78 degrees N lat. and altitude 7000 ft. For processed snow, as for naturally compacted snow, a linear relationship exists for Young's modulus density at densities above 0.5 g/cm3 and an xponential relationship for densitie below this value. Thin section studies indicated that the numb r and size of bonds determine Young's modulus. Bonding begins a few hours after deposition by the snow miller; the bonds develop to approximately 0.2 mm in diam some 20 days after deposition. (A UTHOR)
