Abstract : Numerical calculations of the single particle trajectories of low-energy electrons during the start-up phase of a betatron have been performed. The necessary conditions for capture into a stable orbit have been determined for those situations in which the electrons are injected from a position outside the potential well, or after being created within the well their subsequent motion brings them outside the well. It is shown, for example, that for a betatron having a 5-cm orbit radius, a peak magnetic field of 2.3 weber/sq meter, a 1-microsec rise time and a 1.7% well depth, electrons injected from a point outside the potential well will penetrate the potential barrier and be captured for energies within a band about 276 ! 100 volts.
